History of the GMC Yukon

First appearing in 1993, the GMC Yukon was the renamed Jimmy and given four doors in 1995 instead of the previous two-door models. The 1995 version had a shorter wheelbase than the Suburban. In 1998, the Yukon came out with a 5.7-liter Vortec V-8 engine that delivered 255 horsepower and 33 pounds per foot of torque. 1999 saw the two trim levels, the SLE and SLT, riding on aluminum wheels, with an AM/FM stereo system, a cassette player, and air conditioning that made driving a pleasure. The year 2000 saw big changes in the Yukon's re-engineering and reshaping. Built on Chevrolet/GMC's truck chassis, the Yukon gained disc brakes on all four wheels. A 4.8L V-8 engine was smaller but put out an extra twenty-five horsepower. Also available that year was a 5.3-liter, V-8 engine that delivered 285 horsepower. Year by year, the Yukon gained such improvements as an optional third-row seat with a 50/50 split fold. The outdated cassette players were replaced with CD players. In 2007, a new 5.3-liter, Vortec V-8 engine output 320 horsepower and debuted the Active Fuel Management system. A revised grille and headlight housing perked up the front end appearance. In 2009, a six-speed automatic transmission was paired up with that 5.3-liter, V8 engine. Again in 2015, the engine was upgraded to the new Ecotec3 that replaced the Vortec line and incorporated noise-reducing features that provide for a quieter ride in the cabin.
